OPENING SEQUENCE
CLASS EXERCISE:
View opening sequence of Gladiator by Ridley Scott (or any other core film of choice). Suggested film orientations could include: Citizen Kane, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Pink Panther, Australia, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Truman Show, Star Wars, The Lion King, Saving Private Ryan.
QUESTIONS:
1) Identify how the film provides context for audience. List aural and visual techniques with examples and discuss the effect on them as an audience. What is the film-maker’s intended effect?
CLASS AND HOMEWORK:
Students to select an opening sequence of a film of their choice (no more than 10 minutes duration). Students must identify the film techniques and the intended effect in this opening sequence in preparation for presenting their ideas to the class in the next lesson.
